Degrowth in Fashion for Environmental and Social Sustainability
MURAT YAVUZ
Overview
The mainstream “Fast Fashion” industry is built on the exploitation of labor and nature. Many of the people who make our clothes do not earn enough to meet their basic needs and are already feeling the effects of the climate crisis that the fashion industry is fueling. According to the World Bank, the fashion industry accounts for 10% of global carbon emissions, more than all international flights and shipping combined. In the face of such devastation, many alternative fashion theories and trends are being developed. One of these is the idea of Degrowth in Fashion. The application of the principles that underlie degrowth theory to fashion is being proposed by many thinkers and activist movements to prevent both environmental and social disasters.
The aim of this course is to reveal the causes and consequences of the social and environmental damage caused by the „Global Fashion Supply Chain“ based on statistics and maps. Thus, in the first eight weeks of the fourteen-week course, students‘ knowledge and attitudes will be transformed. During the following six weeks, students will be able to make theoretical, practical or artistic suggestions or applications for Degrowth in Fashion.
