Cultural Heritage and Authoritarian Urbanism

M. OĞUZ SİNEMİLLİOĞLU

Overview

The main objective of the course is to examine the effects of security policies on urbanization and to discuss the controllability of security policies in favor of the city during the urbanization process.
Urbanization stands out as a very decisive element in security and management due to being a living and production area. The forms of government of countries (parliamentary system, presidency etc.) and the problems they experience (ethnic, geographical and economic) directly affect the decisions taken regarding the planning of cities and the implementation of these plans. Throughout the term, general urban planning principles, the formation process of urban culture, the importance of cultural heritage in the urbanization process, the handicaps experienced in the protection of cultural heritage in the process of implementing security policies and the process experienced in determining priorities will be discussed. While the urbanization policies and management styles of countries aim to protect their cultural richness on the one hand, the security problem on the other hand produces many contradictions.

In this course, urban planning history, practices and solution proposals will be evaluated with the assumption that security policies should not prevent the protection of cultural heritage; the contradictions experienced will be examined through the example of Diyarbakır.
