Refuge Worldwide

The following radio show was prepared by the Refuge Worldwide collective in collaboration with Dr. Nagehan Uskan from the Off University and RePLITO team and photographer Zahra Gardi. In this show, they reflect on the 2023 workshop titled I Escaped to My Future: Visual Storytelling as Resistance.

This workshop documented the aspirations of unaccompanied minor children regarding their future in Berlin through self-directed videos. The resilience of these children, as noted by Uskan and Gardi, is remarkable not only because they have traversed numerous borders and countries alone, often enduring extreme hardships for extended periods, but also because of their rapid adaptation to life in Berlin. Despite not sharing a common language, religion, or past, these children find ways to live together and support one another. They arrive in Berlin with high expectations for their future, particularly in terms of education and professional aspirations, and express a strong desire to begin their adult lives as soon as possible.
