OPEN COST Action
in Tirana

In June, we hosted a session, Digital Security: Creating safe spaces for online learning.

Since our founding in 2017, digital security has been at the core of our work. We have been offering courses in hybrid and online formats and engage in collaborative research practices, integrating digital security into our daily activities. Furthermore, we aim to share this knowledge with our network and other civil society actors and academics.

On June 26-28, 2025, the OPEN COST Action hosted its first Training School alongside its annual conference. OPEN explores how the rise of new nationalism and geopolitical tensions exert a growing pressure on the openness of European higher education and research and examines its implications for the future of Europe. The Training School focused on topics such as self-censorship, academic security, and well-being. We were thrilled to be invited to host a session titled “Digital Security: Creating Safe Spaces for Online Learning.”

The session was well-received, attracting participants ranging from young researchers to experienced professors. Scholars shared insights about their research and teaching processes, the types of data they collect, and the individuals they interact with. They then brainstormed safer methods to address these issues and how to prepare for potential digital security breaches. The session concluded with Off University presenting its holistic approach to digital security and strategies for creating an effective digital security plan.
